Artist Statement:
It’s common for a photographer to seek out the majestic landscape, or the monuments that hold our collective attention. I think there is great value in those images, but after a lengthy absence from photography, and years spent trying to capture those grand views I found there is equal value in the commonplace.
These photos were all taken within no more than forty five minutes from my front door. I did not set out with a narrative or a specific story to tell. I found that leaving myself open to what was close to home was more than enough to make me stop the car to make a photograph. Something as simple as handprints on the wall of an empty ballfield dugout, or a row of cardboard crucifixes could make for an image that could be as moving as so many of the places a thousand miles away and bathed in beautiful light.
Over time, a specific narrative might develop. I might find a particular story to tell that’s close to home, but for now letting the familiar and the smaller things that are close move me to photograph is more than enough.
