Artist Statement:
To put our collaborative method succinctly, we work on the same piece of art alternately and individually, without any discussion while the piece goes back and forth between us. Either of us can start a piece. Each of us can make any changes, additions, or deletions that he/she feels necessary short of destroying the work entirely. All communication happens nonverbally thru the work itself. The work can change hands many times or only once. If changes are made by one artist, the work must go back to the other artist, and the cycle continues. The work is finished when one person having just received it decides not to make changes.
Creatively it is much more difficult than working alone. Academically it raises interesting questions about the role of ego and objectively in creating successful works of art.
