Dale Emmart ventured into bookmaking during COVID isolation, transforming this exploration into a new artistic journey. What began as a way to enhance teaching on Zoom evolved into a deep appreciation for the art of creating books. Emmart’s work in this exhibition reflects the tactile and temporal nature of books, inviting viewers to interact with the pages and experience the unfolding of art in a personal, hands-on way.
These artist books span a range of ideas and techniques—from repurposed drawings and reflections on personal loss to explorations of environmental themes and spontaneous creative expressions. Each book is more than a collection of images; it’s a participatory experience that blurs the line between traditional two-dimensional art and the intimate, interactive world of bookmaking. Emmart is excited to share this evolving art form at DVAA, offering a fresh perspective on the intersection of painting and bookmaking.
About the Artist:
Dale Emmart, based in Honesdale, PA, is a celebrated artist and educator with a distinguished career spanning several decades. Born in New York City and raised in New Jersey, she earned her BFA from Cooper Union School of Art in 1975 and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1983. Emmart has been an influential figure in the New York art scene since the early 1980s, managing a large studio space in Tribeca and teaching at prestigious institutions such as Fordham University, Parsons School of Design, and Brooklyn College. Her work has been exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at the John Davis Gallery in Hudson, New York, and in various venues across New England, Pennsylvania, and New York City. Her pieces are held in numerous public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
Emmart’s contributions to the arts have been recognized with residencies at The MacDowell Colony and The Virginia Center for the Arts, as well as a NYFA Grant in Painting and an Artist Workspace Grant from The Dieu Donné Papermill. In addition to her artistic practice, she curated two notable group shows, “Multiple Incremental Repetition” and “Just…Sky,” for DVAA. Emmart also co-directs a landscape artist retreat in Portugal and served as Department Head of Art at The Brearley School in New York City from 2015-2021.
