Chris Heim documents the Angola Prison and their rodeo day.
The prison rodeo is a day the inmates come together and have a taste of freedom. Together they prepare meals that run in their families, that they grew up eating. On show day, they welcome family, and their loved ones see them thriving beyond the confines of glass-plated visiting booths. Heim went behind the walls on rodeo week to document the coaches and riders. Inside one of the darkest systems of American oppression he discovered a deep sense of possibility. Of what working together looks like. Of a different world other than the one we’ve built.
