Subterranean: Works by Jamie Kim & Francis Estrada, curated by Rashmi Viswanathan
Curated by Rashmi Viswanathan, “Subterranean” brings together two artists, Jamie Kim and Francis Estrada, whose works show a narrative caught between the past and the present. Kim’s figurative paintings and portraits are heavily influenced by news and media sources, traditional Korean folk-art imagery, and childhood photographs. Francis Estrada re-interprets historical archives within a decolonial and anti-authoritarian framework, re-imagining the lives and times of people placed at the margins of the state.
Rashmi Viswanathan is an art historian who looks at how arts move across different cultural, regional, and temporal contexts. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hartford and lives in Brooklyn.
