Nickel Boys
Nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, ‘Nickel Boys’ tells the story of Elwood, a young black man who’s college dreams are shattered when he’s sentenced to Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory in the Jim Crow South. Clinging to his optimistic worldview, Elwood strikes up a friendship with Turner, a fellow Black teen who dispenses fundamental tips for survival.
Director RaMell Ross uses the camera in alternating first person to tell the story of these two boys, which is a technique unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It’s been said that this new film “revolutionizes the cinematic language.”
