Mariana Newhard: Queen of the Nile
Having shared an early draft of this hybrid theatre opera at NACL last summer, Mariana Newhard returns to further refine Queen of the Nile, a recounting of the harrowing path of a fallen heroine and what happens when our idols cease to be our north stars. It is the story of Anna, a woman who idolizes real-life award-winning journalist Lara Logan, and follows her life from Logan’s traumatic sexual assault in Egypt by a mob of two hundred men through to her shift into an alt-right conspiracy theorist. Queen of the Nile explores everyday absorption of cataclysmic trauma and unravels the sexualization of women in media, politics, and mythology. It exposes the pitfalls of seeking truth amidst a radicalized political climate and the invasive presence of news and social media.
On Friday, October 20th, Mariana and her collaborators will share a work-in-progress presentation of the full script/libretto at NACL. After the presentation join the artists for conversation over delicious, locally-sourced homemade soup. Admission is by donation ($25 Suggested) at the door or in advance at NACL.ORG.
