Jo Cunningham’s The Freak Family Roadshow
Pulling up outside the gallery for one day only is self-taught sculptor Jo Cunningham’s The Freak Family Roadshow – a traveling sculptural sideshow housed inside a restored 1950s trailer. Inspired by underground comics created by Cunningham’s father in the 1980s, the immersive installation follows a gorilla mother, alien father, and their strange hybrid child through an eccentric domestic world that is equal parts roadside attraction, outsider art, and meditation on family and otherness. After traveling across America, The Freak Family Roadshow has attracted national attention, including coverage by CBS News, Boing Boing, Southwest Contemporary, The Oaklandside, and others.
Celebrate four years of The Ruffed Grouse Gallery with the opening of Lisa Gartner: Color TV and a one-day-only appearance by Jo Cunningham’s The Freak Family Roadshow.
