First Drafts First Impressions
DVAA is delighted to host Arts and Ecology, Inc. as they present “First Drafts First Impressions” which will showcase works-in-progress, by the two incredibly talented playwrights selected to take part in the 2023 Catskills Creative Residency.
The staged reading will be followed by a moderated discussion with the playwrights, the director, and the audience, aimed at getting audience feedback, feelings, and impressions. We look forward to a lively conversation with our enthusiastic local audience!
FEATURED PLAYS:
PATTERN RECOGNITION by Julie Marino
Taking its title from the cognitive science term “pattern recognition,” the play examines the human propensity to find and interpret patterns in everyday life — often whether they are there or not. At an art gallery, in an old French chateau, and on a peaceful beach at sunset, our characters encounter phenomena they are convinced are imparting life-changing messages. But heeding those messages and turning them into action can lead to some disappointing and often ridiculous surprises.
SUPERTALL by Mark Steinbach
Supertall follows Tina and Billy, two neurotic real estate agents as they go about their day trying to close a deal at The Park, a midtown highrise. They get stuck in an elevator and their deal falls through then gets revived then falls through roughly 10 times — but business soon becomes secondary to the emotional ups and downs of their increasingly claustrophobic partnership.
