Art Exhibit Opening: A New Lens on the Counterculture: Photographs by Mark Goff

The Narrowsburg Union is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “A New Lens on the Counterculture: Photographs by Mark Goff,” opening on June 12, 2021 and on display until August 7th. Opening starts at 5:00pm for self guided tours and ends at 8:00pm.

Mark Goff’s skills as a photographer began to unfold while serving in the US Navy during the War in Vietnam aboard the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier. His unique visual perspective continued to develop as he produced a treasure trove of photographs capturing the counterculture spirit of the 1960’s and 70’s, as well as some of the greatest musicians and celebrities of the era.

“A New Lens on the Counterculture: Photographs by Mark Goff” will feature powerful images from major gatherings, demonstrations and rallies of the 1960s and 1970s, including the Chicago War Protest, the Washington Mobilization and Anti-Inauguration marches of 1969, the 1967 March on the Pentagon, the Alternative Media Conference of 1970 and other singular moments. With press credentials and onstage access, Goff also covered the 1969 Woodstock Festival, and his photographs of the iconic festival, its artists and fans, will be of particular interest to Sullivan County residents and music fans everywhere. In 2019, many of Goff’s photos of the Woodstock Festival were shown for the first time to commemorate the concert’s 50th anniversary, thanks to the work of designer and artist Nick Clemente, manager of the collection on behalf of Goff’s daughters since Goff’s death in 2018.

With never-before-seen images from the 1960s and 1970s of historic protests for peace and justice, Goff’s photographs remind us that activism is not confined to an era, a decade, or a single issue, and challenge us to reflect on what has changed, what has stayed the same and how we can, individually and collectively, move forward.

Goff’s photographs will be available for purchase as giclée prints made from high resolution scans of original negatives and printed with pigment inks on archival paper. In addition, a special, limited edition of traditional, black and white silver gelatin prints made by Curator Krystal Grow at the newly opened Greyscale Darkroom and Photo Lab at the Narrowsburg Union will also be available for purchase over the course of the exhibition.
