Mambo Jazz Party

Thursday, July 31, 2025

Join us in Tusten Theatre for an evening of high energy Latin Jazz!

Perhaps no other band resembles a Bugatti super car better than Mambo Jazz Party. Powerful, elegant, and sophisticated, engineered to gracefully navigate the challenging sonic territories they routinely entertain, Mambo Jazz Party accelerates from curiosity to sheer joy within seconds of any style of music they launch into. Whether live or recorded, this unique group feeds off the inspiring alchemy and fearless energy of their brilliant leader, trumpeter Jonathan Powell.

Technically elite, fluent in several kinds of music, and having earned the reputation as a consummate musician and scorching soloist, Powell’s career has encompassed rock, funk, pop, salsa, Jazz and Latin Jazz. As a sought after sideman in New York City, Powell has performed with Eddie Palmieri, Arturo O’ Farrill, Darcy James Argue, Maria Schneider’s Orchestra, Miguel Zenon, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Oscar Hernández, Gregorio Uribe, and Pedro Giraudo.

Meanwhile Powell’s bandmates, accomplished musicians ranging from NYC all-stars (including alumnus from Eddie Palmieri’s groups) to veteran artists within his home state of Colorado, all delight in propelling salsa and Latin Jazz to new heights. Central to the band’s appeal are Powell’s compositional and arranging skills; a captivating practice of incorporating the ancestral legacies of mambo, rumba, and the cha cha, and the full throttle nature of descarga and comparsa, with the kind of charismatic musicality that can revitalize legendary Jazz standards. Renown musicians like Jimmy Bosch, Doug Beavers, Ryan Keberle, Manuel Valera, Luques Curtis, Camilo Molina and Luisito Quintero make up the chorus of mastery that shapes Mambo Jazz Party’s signature sound.
