DVAA is thrilled to host the Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) at the historic Tusten Theatre for an evening of chamber music with their program, Grand Nonet.
GRAND NONET
A nonet is a composition for nine instruments which is the perfect blend of timbres and colors. The format takes the essence of the symphony and presents it with the intimacy of chamber music.

COMPOSERS
Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was a brilliant French composer and a virtuoso pianist and through her Nonet, found international success and received praises from Robert Schumann and Joseph Joachim. This success led her demand equal pay to her male colleagues at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire. The nonet has also been an inspiration ensemble for various arrangements of performers and composers alike.
Lee Hoiby (1926-2011) composed his Variations on a theme by Schubert in 1979. Theme comes from Schubert’s German Dances, D. 336 and Lee Later felt that the music would lend itself well to a larger instrumental tapestry. He re-scored the work for the traditional nonet setting making small changes to the variations and adding new ones in the process. This nonet shows Lee’s masterful ability to create innovative music rooted in a tradition which making a beautiful homage to Schubert.

The Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra unites professional musicians to perform across Sullivan County, New York, enhancing community life through artistic expression, cultural experiences, and education. Co-founded by double bassist Andrew Trombley and violinist Akiko Hosoi, SCCO is a part of Nesin Cultural Arts and promotes the arts’ role in economic development, creativity, diversity, and global cultural awareness. Their educational initiatives include the Aspiring Young Musicians Program and the Summer Music Academy, aimed at developing young talent. SCCO performs a broad repertoire, from classical to contemporary works, significantly enriching the local cultural landscape.
