“Mercedes: Para los Callejones”
NACL presents a work-in-progress reading of Mercedes: Para los Callejones by Modesto “Flako” Jimenez and Oye Group. Mercedes is a multidisciplinary stage play inspired by Flako’s grandmother, who raised him in Bushwick, Brooklyn, after he immigrated to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic. As her caregiver during her battle with dementia, Flako uncovered a trove of personal archives—letters, receipts, and documents—that revealed her quiet legacy in helping Latine families migrate and survive. The play he has constructed from this personal source material traces one woman’s impact across generations, exploring matriarchy, memory, identity, and the complex inheritance of familial and cultural trauma.
Saturday, November 15th, at 6:00pm NACL invites audiences to a reading of the play by Oye Group, followed by a sharing of soup and conversation with the artists. The reading will be in Spanish, with English translation.
