SUMMARY:Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra Presents “Sounds of Jewish Culture”
DESCRIPTION:The Nesin Cultural Arts (NCA) supported Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO), in collaboration with critically acclaimed Klezmer band Big Galut(e), will present “Sounds of Jewish Culture.” This series of workshops and performances will include performances by Big Galut(e) as well as SCCO featuring music written by Jewish composers persecuted during the Holocaust and those oppressed by the Nazi regime.\nKeep in mind, there are three separate events. Please be sure to visit the appropriate ticketing page for the event(s) you’d like to attend.\nSaturday 4:30pm @ Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre – Big Galut(e) Family Concert\nSaturday 9:30pm @ Monticello High School Auditorium – Big Galut(e) in Concert\nSunday 3:00pm @ Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre – SCCO Chamber Music Concert\nTickets: $25 / $10 Students\n\nBig Galut(e)\nWinner of the Simcha Prize at the 2017 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, Big Galut(e) has been described as ‘soulful and un-selfconsciously poignant’, ‘jubilant’, ‘a real treat for open minds’, and ‘a serious band with lousy American humor’. Big Galut(e) performs a unique repertoire of Jewish music spanning five continents and six centuries. Highlights of the 2017 season include appearances in Amsterdam, at the prestigious Glimmerglass Festival, and on the New York Klezmer Series.\nNoted by critics for “the virtuosity of its members”, the band has been heard on APM’s Performance Today, PRI’s The World, and WNYC’s New Sounds, among many radio and TV outlets. The band has appeared as soloists with orchestra, at the National Yiddish Book Center, at chamber music venues (sharing season series with Dawn Upshaw and Zuill Bailey, among others), at colleges from Stanford to Oberlin to Hebrew Union, and at temples, synagogues, and JCCs from Hawaii to the East Coast.\n\nSCCO\nThe Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra was established in July, 2016 to help continue the thriving arts culture in Sullivan County. The Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra’s mission is to serve the community and elevate the quality of life for all generations through artistic expression and cultural experiences; to inspire a viable renaissance; promoting a positive economic resurgence; supporting physical and emotional well-being by enhancing the cultural fabric of our community.\nSCCO is an NCA supported project. This program is made possible in part by funds from the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County, Fairgame Upstate Theater Coalition and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the NY State Legislature.\n
